According to the Tangyun (Tángyùn) and Zhengyun (Zhèngyùn) rhyming dictionaries, pronounced shízhào qie; according to the Jiyun (Jíyùn) and Yunhui (Yùnhuì) rhyming dictionaries, pronounced shízhào qie, in the ráo qusheng tone. The Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) states: To exert oneself. It is formed from the radical Strength (lì) and zhào as the phonetic component. The Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) states: To strengthen oneself. Also, beautiful. From Yangzi Fayan (Yángzǐ Fǎyán): Dǒng Zhòngshū's talent was indeed outstanding. From Pan Yue's Eulogy for Yang Wuzhong: His brilliant reputation was clear and outstanding. Also, from Emperor Cheng's Edict in the Book of Han (Hàn Shū): The late emperor encouraged agriculture. Jin Zhuo's commentary states: To encourage and exert oneself.
