In Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), the pronunciation is mò bài qiè. In Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is mò xiè qiè. All are pronounced mài. Explanations of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states: To exert oneself. The Book of Documents (Shujing), in the 'Establishing Government' chapter, says: With effort, assist our nation. Also, Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui) states it is commonly written as another character pronounced mài. The Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan) quotes from the Book of Documents (Shujing): Gao Yao exerted himself to cultivate virtue. The commentary explains it as "to exert oneself."
