Lu; Kangxi stroke count: 15; Page 1466, Entry 26
Pronounced lu.
According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen jiezi), this refers to slow and dull speech.
In the Analects (Lunyu), it is said: "Shen is slow and dull." He Yan comments that lu means dull, noting that Zengzi was dull by nature.
It also refers to the name of a state. According to the record on the Odes of Lu (Lu song pu), the State of Lu was the ancestral land of Shaohao Zhi. The Book of Han (Qianhan shu), in the Treatise on Geography, states that after the rise of the Zhou dynasty, the ancestral land of Shaohao, Qufu, was enfeoffed to Boqin, the son of the Duke of Zhou, to serve as the Marquis of Lu and manage the ancestral sacrifices. According to the Explanations of Names (Shiming), lu signifies dullness, implying that the state was mountainous with water, and its people were simple, honest, and slow to react.
It is also a surname. According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds (Guangyun), the descendants of Boqin used the name of their state as a surname, originating from Fufeng Commandery.
There is also a compound surname, Lubu.
It is also an ancient variant form of the character lü (travel). Detailed annotations can be found under the Radical: Square (fāng), at six strokes.
