As defined in Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it describes an exclamation of alarm or surprise, read like the word for clamor. Xu Xuan says: In contemporary common usage, it is written differently as the word for noisy, which is incorrect. According to Jade Chapter (Yupian), it means clamor, and is interchangeable with the word for uproar. According to Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to the sound of calling out. Also, pronounced xuan. The meaning is the same. Also, according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the word for litigation was anciently written as this character. In the Han dynasty clerical script of the Heng stele and the Sun Gen stele, both contain this character. According to the Explanation of Text (Shiwen), it is the same as the character for neighbor. According to Records of Blowing Jing (Chuijing Lu), the characters for neighbor, the variant lín, and this character are all one and the same.
