A term for a prison.
Shuowen: To guard.
Book of Rites (Liji), Monthly Ordinances: To inspect prisons.
Commentary: The word yu signifies to restrain. It is used to prevent criminals from entering or leaving the detention cell.
Records for Beginning Students (Chuxueji): The word ling signifies to govern. The word yu signifies to defend. This refers to the management and containment of prisoners. Another interpretation: ling signifies to command, and yu signifies to awaken, allowing the criminal to enter and repent.
Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Fourth Year of Duke Xuan: Imprisoned Bo Ying at Liaoyang and executed him.
Also identical to the character yu (a horse stable).
Shuowen: The term lingyu is also written as lingyu (variant form), a place used for detaining criminals.
