Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): In Mount Tai, there is a wild beast; its shape is like a pig, and it contains pearls within its body; its name is called Tongtong. Its cry sounds as if it is calling its own name.
Commentary: Guo Pu says: The pronunciation is like the tong in yindong. Pianya says: Tongtong is the pearl-pig. Dan Yuanzi says: Summon the lazy Tong to serve as the vanguard.
Guo Pu, Praise for the Illustration of Tongtong: Clamshells can contain pearls, why cannot a wild beast? The Tongtong looks like a pig, its appearance coarse yet it harbors treasures. Calamities have no other cause; they are all self-invited.
Also Compendium of Phonetics (Jiyun): Pronounced tong. Originally written as the character for wild pig. Sometimes written as another variant. The character yong was originally written with the cloth radical and the yong phonetic, suspected to be the character for lazy.
Verification: Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): In Mount Tai, there is a wild beast; its name is called Tongtong. Its cry is the calling of its own name. According to the style of the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), the original phrasing its name was changed to its cry, and the word for calling was changed to the technical term for a cry.
