According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), to catch fish. From the Book of Changes (Yijing), regarding hunting and fishing. Also, to encroach upon or take without selection is called fishing. From the Record of Social Mores (Fangji), feudal lords do not fish for beauty. The commentary states that fishing for beauty is like using a net to catch fish, taking them all without discrimination.
Alternatively written as the variant form (yu). From the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), the officials in charge of timing. Also, the name of a river in Yuyang. From the Commentary on the Classic of Waterways (Shuijingzhu), the Fishing River originates southeast of the district. Also a surname, such as Song Yuzhong Xiu.
