According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi), Jinyu is a beautiful jade.
Xu says: Yu also refers to the luster of jade.
In the Zuo Commentary (Zuo zhuan), year 15 of Duke Xuan: Jinyu hides its flaws.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), Jade Pattern: The heir wears jade pendants with silk ribbons.
Also, in the Meaning of Visits: Flaws do not obscure the jade.
The commentary notes: Yu refers to that which is beautiful within it.
Also, in the History of the Former Han (Qian Han shu), Treatise on Rites and Music: Elephant-carriage, white in color, comes from the west.
The commentary by Shigu notes: Xiangzai refers to an elephant-drawn carriage. Mountains produce elephant-carriages, which are auspicious vehicles. Yu describes a beautiful appearance, indicating this auspicious vehicle is beautiful in its white color and appears from the west.
Also used as a personal name.
In Cao Zhi’s Lingzhi pian: Boyu, at the age of seventy, wore colorful clothes to amuse his parents.
