According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to gathering grain. Xu states that it implies the gathering or collecting of things.
It also means to rest or to be relaxed and happy. According to the Compendium of Rhymes (Yunhui), to return to life after death is called su. It is commonly written as the variant form su.
In the Documents of the Elder Tradition (Zhonghui zhi gao), it appears as the later ones will find rest. In the Record of Music (Yueji) from the Book of Rites (Liji), it is written that hibernating insects awaken. The commentary explains that to breathe again is called su. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) notes that it is commonly written in the variant form su.
In the Chronicle of Foreign Lands (Zhifang waiji), it refers to Jesus, which in Western languages means to save the world and bring life.
It also rhymes with suo. In the Yellow Court Classic (Huangting jing), if one calls upon it when near death, one will be revived, and by practicing this for a long time, one will fly to the Great Rosy Clouds. Rosy clouds is pronounced he.
