According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced ling. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced ling. It is the name of a fish.
In the Verses of Chu (Chuci), Heaven's Questions, it asks where the ling fish is found. The commentary states that the ling fish is a carp. According to the Materia Medica (Bencao), Tao Yinju states that the ling-carp is similar in shape to a carp but shorter and smaller, and possesses four feet. According to the Illustrated Praises of Strange Fish (Yiyu Tu Zan), there is a fish capable of swallowing a boat called the ling; its back and belly have spikes shaped like water caltrops, which fishermen fear, as nets cannot catch them. Another source states that the hide of the ling-carp is called the mountain-piercing armor (pangolin). According to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), it is also the name of a beast. There is also stone-ling, which is a medicinal name.
