Tang Rhymes (Tang yun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced shí.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A rat with five skills. It can fly but cannot clear a house; it can climb a tree but cannot reach the top; it can swim but cannot cross a river; it can dig a hole but cannot conceal its body; it can run but cannot outpace a human.
Erya (Erya), Explanation of Beasts: The shi rat.
Commentary: The body is the size of a rat, the head resembles a rabbit, and the tail is furry and yellow-green in color. It likes to eat grains and beans in the fields. In the region west of the pass, it is called the qu rat.
Tang Rhymes (Tang yun): Rat (shǔ).
Piya (Piya): The shi rat has a rabbit head and looks like a rat but is larger. It can stand like a human and cross its front two feet to dance. It damages crops and is also called the sparrow rat. In the Materia Medica (Bencao), it is also known as the shuo rat.
