According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to grind. In the Discourses of the States (Guoyu), it is written that Zhao Wenzi built a house, hewing its rafters and grinding them. In the Nature is Evil chapter of the Xunzi, it is written that blunt metal must be ground and sharpened, and only then will it be sharp. In the Model Sayings (Fayan) by Yang Xiong, it asks if there is a knife to grind with. According to the Jade Chapter (Yupian), it also refers to grinding grain into husks.
