Pronounced bai (falling tone). To pull out. Classic of Universal Principles (Yuanbao Jing) states: Pulling out the mountain and the base. The commentary says: This refers to rolling stones and felling trees. The note says: The character for mountain is pronounced ye. The character for base means root. It is also used interchangeably with the character for bow. In Wang Yinglin’s Investigation of the Book of Odes (Shikao), it is written: Do not cut, do not pull. It is also written as the character for bow.
Pronounced ba. To break or destroy. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Book of the Suburban Sacrifices (Fengshan Shu), it is written: Striking and inspecting to obtain the tripod. The commentary, Records of Investigations (Suoyin), states: This means to strike or to pull. It also means to strike. Sometimes written as a variant form (ba).
Pronounced bie. To tear apart; to split or divide.
