In the Book of Rites (Liji), in the chapter Evolution of Rites (Liyun): If one practices benevolence and emphasizes yielding, showing the people that there are constant standards, yet there are those who do not follow this, those who are in positions of power will be abandoned by the masses and become a calamity. The commentary states: To be in a position of power means to occupy a high status. To abandon means that if one does not follow ritual, abandons benevolence and yielding, and does not hold to the five matters of righteousness and trustworthiness, one will be cast aside.
