Chou Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Earth (tǔ) Cai Kangxi Stroke Count: 11 Page 230, Entry 43 According to the Book of Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced cai (falling tone). It refers to a fief or an estate granted to an official. According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced cai (third tone). In the Dialect Dictionary (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong, it is noted that a tomb is sometimes referred to as cai. In the commentary by Guo Pu, it is explained that ancient ministers and high officials were granted land, and upon their death, they were buried within those territories, hence the name. The Rectification of Characters (Zhengzitong) defines it as referring to officials. Because one relies on an official position to receive an endowment of land, the land is called an estate.
