According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a vessel for holding cooked grain. According to the Regional Speeches (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong, in the regions between the states of Song, Chu, and Wei, a bowl is called a yu.
