Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explanations and Analysis of Characters) states it means to bend or fold. Another interpretation is to wind or coil.
Book of Rites (Zhouli), section Winter Officials, Artificers Record (Kaogongji), entry on Arrow Makers: If the middle is weak, it becomes bent (yu). Commentary: Yu means bent.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Qu Yuan: Feelings of injustice knotted and twisted (yu) in pain. Commentary: Yu means bent.
Also, according to Guangya (Expanded Dictionary), yu refers to a rope or cord.
Also a surname. According to Guangyun (Expanded Rhymes), during the Later Qin dynasty, there was a Marquis of Feixiang named Yu Miao of Shiping.
