According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as, meaning the reflux of breath during eating and drinking, preventing one from breathing, derived from the character for reverse. Note: Now standardized in clerical script as. The original character was written with the component for hair (shan) below the component for legs (ren).
