Pronounced ji. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means rain ceasing. Formed by the rain radical and the phonetic element qi. In the Erya (Erya), it is recorded that ji signifies rain stopping. The commentary notes that people in Nanyang refer to the cessation of rain as ji. The sub-commentary explains that ji means to stop. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), the Hongfan chapter mentions rain and the clearing of skies. The commentary explains that cracks in tortoise shells used for divination sometimes resemble rain and sometimes resemble the clearing of rain. In the Biography of Wei Xiang in the History of the Former Han Dynasty (Hanshu), it is used in the sense of restraining majesty. The commentary notes that ji here means to collect or to cease.
