Ancient script. Pronounced ji. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it refers to the place where one steps. According to the Guangyun (Guangyun), it means footprints. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), Year 12 of Duke Xuan, it says, to relocate the footprints of a great state to Zheng. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu), Biography of Yang Xiong, it says, to match steps and cast footprints. In the Huainanzi (Huainanzi), Shuo Shan Xun chapter, it says, the foot presses the ground to create a footprint. Furthermore, any achievement or accomplishment that is visible is called a footprint. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), Wucheng chapter, it says, King Tai initiated the foundation of the kingly footprints. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu), Biography of Wang Bao, it says, those who search for people and seek scholars must establish the footprints of a hegemon. Furthermore, anything left behind by predecessors is called a footprint. In the Zhuangzi (Zhuangzi), Tian Yun chapter, it says, the Six Classics are the footprints of the former kings. Furthermore, following or adhering to something is also called a footprint. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), Charges of Cai Zhong, it says, you then move along the footprints of yourself. The commentary says, Zhong had nothing to rely on, therefore it is called moving along the footprints. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu), Biography of Ping Dang, it says, deeply trace his path and work to cultivate his foundation. The commentary says, this means seeking their traces. Furthermore, anything that has a visible form is called a footprint. In the Huainanzi (Huainanzi), Shuo Shan Xun chapter, it says, those who follow footprints are not those who can create footprints. In the Old Book of Tang (Tang Shu), Biography of Wei Zheng, it says, how can a ruler and minister share the same heart and engage in formal appearances. Furthermore, examining based on facts is also called a footprint. In the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu), Table of Meritorious Officials, it says, trace the meritorious officials of Han. Also in the Biography of Du Qin, it says, to seek the heart of Heaven and trace the gains and losses. Furthermore, wind footprints are the footprints of cultural influence. In the History of the Later Han (Hou Han Shu), Biography of Zhu Fu, it says, quite eager to encourage wind footprints. Furthermore, trace shooting refers to following tracks to shoot. In Lu Ji's Yan Lian Zhu, it says, when fire is strong, smoke is faint; when the nature is full, emotions are constrained. Therefore, the ruins of Yin evoke the sorrow of witnessing things, and the Zhou capital has no footprints of lingering. In the Jiyun (Jiyun), it is sometimes written in a variant form. The commentary says, this means following their traces. Carefully corrected according to the original commentary, changing follow to seek. In the History of the Later Han (Hou Han Shu), Western Regions chapter, it states Han had trace shooting. Note: The History of the Later Han Western Regions chapter does not contain this phrase; investigation shows it belongs to the Biography of Wang Zun. It is now corrected to the History of the Former Han, Biography of Wang Zun, lead one thousand trace-shooting soldiers.
