According to the Compilation of Sounds (Jiyun), pronounced bi. A cold and damp affliction of the feet. Also used in personal names. In the Biography of Wei and Huo from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), there is a figure named Yanpi who served as the Marquis of Huiqu. The commentary notes that Yan is pronounced ying, and pi is pronounced like the word for shade or shelter. It is also synonymous with the word for shelter. In the Biography of the Prince of Qinghe from the History of the Later Han (Houhan Shu), the text mentions that the soul has a place to rest and find shelter. According to the Categorized Dictionary (Leipian), also pronounced bei, with the same meaning. According to the Categorized Dictionary (Leipian), it is sometimes written as the character for numbness (bi). The word for shade originally used the character for shadow, not the character for yin.
