According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it uses the fanqie phonetic method of gu and huan, pronounced like guan. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) defines it as horns or being youthful. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) describes it as the appearance of bound hair. With hair gathered in tufts like horns — Book of Odes (Shijing). It is sometimes also written in the variant form guan. Furthermore, according to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), this is the ancient form of the character kuang.
