Radical: Stop (zhǐ)
Page 576, Entry 13
Pronounced ju (rising tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Single-component Characters and Analyzing Compound Characters) defines it as to stop. The character is formed with Stop as the radical and Ju as the phonetic element. One interpretation is that it means to dash or strike. Xu Kai's commentary notes that dash refers to striking the head against the ground. Another interpretation is that it means to leap or exceed.
Yu Pian (Jade Chapters) defines it as to disobey, perverse, or to arrive. It is interchangeable with the character ju (distance).
Book of Han (Hanshu), Treatise on Food and Money, records the phrase: The original tortoise shell extends, measuring one foot two inches. The commentary notes that the character refers to the edge of the tortoise shell, and here it means to arrive, indicating a measurement of one foot and two inches between the two edges of the shell.
In the Rhapsody on the Feathered Hunt by Yang Xiong, there is the phrase: Leaping through the void to reach the winding expanse. The commentary by Yan Shigu states that this character is the same as the character for distance.
