Correct Meaning (Zhengzitong): Pronounced ji.
Guanzi, Light and Heavy Section 5 (Guanzi, Qingzhong Wu Pian): Fuxi created the six ji, used to comply with yin and yang, to establish the numbers of nine times nine, to accord with the heavenly way, and thereby bring moral instruction to the world. The kings of the Zhou dynasty followed the six ji to practice the way of yin and the way of yang.
Wang Ruogu states: The six ji are likely similar to the Zhou Gnomon (Zhoubi) mathematical calculations.
Correct Meaning (Zhengzitong): The interpretations of ji by various scholars are unclear, and the character is not recorded in standard dictionaries. The Compilation of Subtle Expressions (Weiwan Bian) uses the term six ji (liuji) to explain it. Ji should be pronounced ji, because the character qi has the pronunciation qi.
Textual Research: Guanzi, Light and Heavy Section 5: Fuxi created the six ji, which he utilized to welcome yin and yang. Based on the original text, the character zuo has been added after the character zao. The character xing has been omitted under the character ji.
