The Book of Odes (Shijing) contains the phrase: Being a ghost, being a yu. Sometimes also written in a variant form. The Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu) records that in the autumn there was a yu. Note: The yu is the short fox; the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao) refers to it as the shooting worker, so named because it holds sand to shoot at people and cause harm. The Treatise on the Five Elements (Wuxing Zhuan) states: Its shape resembles a soft-shelled turtle with three feet, and it grows in the Nanyue region. Another name for it is shadow shooter. It stays in the water, and when a person is on the shore and their shadow is reflected in the water, it attacks the shadow to kill the person, hence the name shadow shooter; others say it holds sand. If it hits a person, the sand enters the skin and muscle, causing wounds resembling scabies. Fu Qian says: The whole body feels alternately hot and cold or generally unwell, thus it is considered a disaster. The Gongyang Commentary (Gongyang Zhuan) states that the meaning of the character is equivalent to delusion. Also the name of a mountain. The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhai Jing) records there is Mount Yu and the Kingdom of the Yu People, whose citizens carry the surname Sang, subsist on millet, and hunt yu to eat. Also interchangeable with the character yu. In Zhang Heng's Rhapsody on the Eastern Capital (Dongjing Fu), there is the phrase: Moreover, there are the ji and the Bifang bird. Note: The Old Ceremonies of the Han (Han Jiuyi) says: Yu is a ghost. Yu is an ancient character, interchangeable with yu. Also, the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) notes the pronunciation as huo. The meaning is the same.
