According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the white rui shrub.
According to the Erya, a dictionary of definitions (Erya), it is the white rui shrub.
Guo commentary states: It is a small, clustered shrub with thorns; its fruit resembles ear ornaments, is purplish-red, and is edible.
According to the Book of Odes (Shijing): The oak and the white rui shrub are pulled up.
Zheng commentary states: The oak is the qing oak tree. The white rui shrub is the tree described.
Lu commentary cites Wang Cang who says: The tree is the same as the oak. Kong Yingda states: The two explanations differ, and it is unclear which is correct.
Also, Yuyang is the name of a Han dynasty palace.
According to the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu): Clouds and vapors, blue and yellow in color, appeared like gathered birds to the south of Yuyang Palace.
