According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the meat on the ribs. Another source states that it refers to the fat between the intestines. Another source states it is a synonym for omentum.
Pronounced luan.
It means lean. Another source defines it as cutting meat into blocks. It also means to cut.
In the Biography of Sima Xiangru from the History of the Former Han Dynasty (Qian Hanshu), the phrase describing the carving of meat suggests that the character is equivalent to a term for cutting meat into blocks.
In the Nine Laments (Jiutan) from the Songs of Chu (Chuci), the text describes a writhing and tangled movement. The commentary notes the pronunciation as luan.
