According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is the name of a jade. According to Approach to the Classics (Erya), in the section Explaining Implements (Shiqi), a jade璋 (zhang) of eight inches in size is called shu. The commentary states that a zhang is half of a gui (ritual jade). Additionally, according to Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is zhou (entering tone). Also, according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), the pronunciation is shu (entering tone). The meaning is the same.
