Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui) give the pronunciation as jǐ lì qiè. Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) gives the pronunciation as jí qì qiè, sounding the same as jì, a thoroughbred horse. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as the north. The character structure is composed of the components for north and different, with the latter serving as the phonetic component. Xu says it refers to a northern province. Jade Chapters (Yupian) states it refers to a northern province, which is why the character follows the component for north. Approaching the Correct (Erya), in the section Explaining Lands, records that the area between the Yellow River and the West River is called Jizhou.
