According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì), it means a corner or edge. The Yupian (Yùpiān) dictionary states it means a corner. From the Book of Documents (Shujing), 'Yi Ji' chapter: "The Emperor's light reached from under Heaven to the distant corners of the sea and the common people." From the Book of Odes (Shijing), 'Beifeng' section: "Wait for me at the city corner." From the Book of Rites (Liji), 'Quli' chapter: "Tucking up one's robes and hurrying to a corner." The commentary explains: 'hurrying to a corner' means to ascend one's mat. Also, from the 'Tangong' chapter of the Book of Rites: "A child sits in a corner holding a candle."
