According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the sunrise. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means brightness, or the sun drying things. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), Chapter on the Canon of Yao, it is written: Residing in Yuyi, which is called the Yang Valley. The commentary states: Yang means brightness. The sun rises from the valley and the world becomes bright, hence it is called Yang Valley. Also, in the Great Plan (Hongfan), it says: rain and yang. The commentary states: Yang is for drying things.
