Tang Rhymes (Tangyun): Pronounced shan. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhymes Compilation (Yunhui): Pronounced shan.
General Explanations of Characters (Pianhai): A small, short jacket. Another theory suggests it is a single-layered, short jacket.
Explanation of Names (Shiming): The term shan signifies to trim, as the hem of the garment is not finished like a sleeve end.
Jinyou Fu by Shu Xi: Uses a sweat-shirt (hanshan) to cover the rib area.

History of the Tang (Tangshu), Treatise on Carriages and Clothing: Scholars use long gowns (lan-shan) made of hemp or grass cloth as formal attire. Ma Zhou requested the addition of decorative cuffs and borders; those with side slits are called split-sided jackets (que-kua-shan).
