Pronounced zhen (third tone). In the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), it is combined from zhang and ren. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), it is combined from zhi and ren. According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to clothing. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it also means to hem or edge. It also means a single-layered garment. In the Analects (Lunyu), it is said, wearing thin and coarse cloth garments during the heat. He Yan notes that in the heat, one wears single-layered clothing. It also refers to a garment with painted patterns. In the Mencius (Mengzi), it is said, wearing a zhen garment. Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced zhen (fourth tone). The meaning is the same. One definition states it is the front part of a garment. Also pronounced zhen (first tone). According to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), it refers to clothing of the same color. In the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), under the capping ceremony for scholars, it is said, the brothers all wear zhen garments. The commentary states that in ancient texts, zhen is written as jun (equal). In the Broad Rhyme (Guangyun), it is also written as zhen.
