Shuowen Jiezi states it means patterned and bright.
Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui) states it refers to literary ornamentation. It is composed of the characters for chapter and bristle. It resembles hair and fur. It refers to the patterns on the feathers and fur of birds and beasts.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) notes it is also used interchangeably with the character for chapter.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes: Woven patterns are the markings of birds.
Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) states it means bright.
