Pronounced shi. According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Five Tones Collected Rhymes (Wuyin Jiyun), the definition is to rely upon. The character is formed by the heart radical with si as the phonetic component. The Broad Rhyme (Guangyun) defines it as to depend on. The Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes, contains the line: Without a mother, upon whom shall I rely?
Additionally, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced zhi. It carries the meaning of an unclear heart or mind.
Furthermore, according to the Jade Compendium (Yupian), the Broad Rhyme (Guangyun), and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced shi. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) defines it as to lean on or trust in. It is sometimes also written in a variant form.
