Zi Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Person (rén) 侍 Kangxi strokes: 8 Page 101, Entry 26 Pronounced shi. The Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), Compendium of Rhymes (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) all provide this reading, which is the same as the character pronounced qi. The Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen) explains it as to attend. The Broad Rhyme (Guangyun) explains it as to be near or to follow. The Origins of the Six Writings (Liushugu) explains it as to accompany at the side. The Book of Rites (Liji), section on the Rules of Deportment (Quli) records: To sit in attendance by the master. There is also the title Changshi (Regular Attendant), which was the name of a eunuch post during the Han dynasty, later gradually adopted as an official title for scholars. For example, the Tang dynasty poet Gao Shi was known as Gao Changshi, and Li Su was known as Li Changshi. Also, the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Account of the House of Zhao (Zhao Shijia) records: Gongzhong Lian recommended Niu Chu, Xun Xin, and Xu Yue. Niu Chu exhorted the ruler using the way of benevolence and righteousness; Xun Xin exhorted the ruler using the way of recommending the worthy and employing the talented; Xu Yue exhorted the ruler using the way of frugality and thrift in expenditures. Note: The character here carries the meaning of to exhort. There is also the compound surname Shiqi, for example, Shiqi Liangqi of the Song dynasty. Textual research: The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Account of the House of Wei (Wei Shijia) originally recorded: Gongzhong Lian recommended Niu Chu, Xun Xin, and Xu Yue. Niu Chu exhorted the ruler using the way of benevolence and righteousness; Xun Xin exhorted the ruler using the way of recommending the worthy and employing the talented; Xu Yue exhorted the ruler using the way of frugality and thrift in expenditures. It is now corrected with caution to match the original text by changing House of Wei to House of Zhao.
