Ancient form. Pronounced qian (level tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Qian refers to a large plow. Another meaning is a type of spade.
Yupian: A lynchpin for a carriage.
Guangyun: Military seals used to secure rooms, and divine repositories used to prepare for emergencies.
Guangyun: Gouqian, a star name. Records of the Grand Historian (Hanshu), Treatise on Astronomy: Mars guarded the Gouqian of the Room mansion. Gouqian is the carriage driver for the Son of Heaven. Commentary: The Room mansion represents the celestial horses; to the right of the dark side, there are two stars called Gouqian, hence it is said to be the driver for the Son of Heaven. Shi’s Classic of Stars (Shishi Xingjing): These two stars govern the law; when they are bright, the ministers perform their duties, and the world is in harmony. Classic of Filial Piety (Xiaojing), Inner Matters: When brothers are affectionate and harmonious, the Gouqian stars do not depart from the Room mansion. Book of Jin (Jinshu), Treatise on Astronomy: Gouqian governs locks and keys; when the king is filial, the Gouqian stars are bright.
Mountain name. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): The first of the second series of Western classics is called Qian Mountain.
Also a lock. Preface to the Erya: The lock and key of the six arts. Commentary: Qian means a lock.
Yang Xiong’s Dialects (Fangyan): The handle of a spear is called qian. Commentary: Pronounced jian (level tone).
Jiyun: Pronounced han (level tone). Means a fetter.
Also pronounced qin (level tone). Same meaning.
