Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Characters and Analysis of Compound Figures): A tree. Xing Bing stated: It resembles the tree known as the tree of heaven (chū). Book of Odes (Shijing): In the mountains there are bushy oak trees. Commentary: Citing the Erya (Approaching Elegance), it states that for the oak, its fruit is called qiu, which is the acorn. Lu Ji Commentary: In the Qin region, people refer to the scrub oak as li, and its fruit, which grows in husks, is called qiu. In the Henei region, people refer to the tree of knotweed as li, which belongs to the same family as the Sichuan pepper and cornelian cherry. Its fruit also grows in husks; this poem from the Qin region should be interpreted according to the local dialect, where scrub oak is the correct term.
