Pronounced yue.
According to the Erya, a dictionary of early usage (Erya, Shigu), it means happy. It also means to submit.
According to the Yunhui, a dictionary of rhymes (Yunhui), it means joyful. It is also a surname. In the Records of the Later Yan (Houyanlu), there is a Yue Wan.
Sometimes it is written as a variant form (shuo). In the Book of Changes (Yijing), under the Yi hexagram: The people are happy without limit. Under the Dui hexagram: They lead the people with joy. In the Analects of Confucius (Lunyu): Is it not a joy?
Mr. Mao says: In ancient times, this was used interchangeably with the word for discourse (shuo). Later people created the character for joy (yue) to distinguish it.
It is also written as (dui). In the Book of Rites (Liji), in the chapter Record on the Subject of Education (Xueji): The Dui Ming says: Always reflect on the beginning and the end while studying.
