In Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced like wǔzuì. In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), it is pronounced like wǔhuì, with the sound of wěi.
In Explanations of Characters (Shuowen jiezi), it refers to duīwěi, meaning steep and precipitous. In Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means high. Yang Xiong's Rhapsody on the Sweet Springs (Ganqüan fu) states: "wěi hū its intertwining." The commentary notes: "Wěi is like cuīwéi," meaning lofty and towering.
Also, a state name. In Gòngyáng's Commentary (Gongyang zhuan), Duke Xi, 26th year: "The Chu people destroyed Wěi, returning with the son of Wěi." In Zheng's Discourse (Zheng yu): "To the west, there were Yú, Guó, Jìn, Wěi, Huò, Yáng, Wèi, Ruì."
Also, a surname. In Zuo's Commentary (Zuo zhuan), Duke Xi, 23rd year: "The Di people attacked Qiangjiuru, capturing two of their daughters, Shúwěi and Jìwěi." The commentary notes: "Wěi is the surname." Also, Duke Xi, 24th year: "Duke Zhao fled to Qi, and the King restored him. He also communicated with the Wěi clan." The commentary notes: "The Wěi clan was a Di empress." In Discourses of Zhou (Zhou yu): "Zhai Wěi is a surname." In Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Qin Shi Huang: "Prime Minister Wěi Lín." The commentary notes: "Wěi is the surname. Lín is the given name."
Also, in Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced like wúhuí. In Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), it is pronounced like yúhuí, with the sound of wéi. In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it means 'lofty appearance'.
Also, a personal name. In Strategies of the Warring States (Zhan guo ce): "Wishing to avenge a wrong, he went to see Guō Wěi." Li Bai's poem: "King Zhao of Yan invited Guō Wěi, and subsequently built the Golden Terrace."
Also, in Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Categorized Chapters (Leipian), it is pronounced like jūwéi, with the sound of guī. In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it means 'mountain name'. In Character Compendium (Zihui), Dàguī is a mountain name. According to the 'Xu Wu Gui' chapter of Zhuangzi (Zhuangzi): "The Yellow Emperor was about to meet Dàguī at Mount Jùcí." Since Jùcí is already a mountain, Dàguī must not be a mountain.
