According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a drought-demon. The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) mentions the Red Ba clan, responsible for clearing filth from walls and houses. According to the Autumn Officials (Qiuguan) section of the Rites of Zhou, it is written as red-ba. The annotation states that red-ba generally means to pull out or remove.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the Great Odes (Daya) section: The drought-demon Ba creates havoc. The commentary states: It is the god of drought.
In the Rites: Extraordinary Classics (Li Yijing): In the south, there is a type of being that is two or three feet tall, with a naked body and eyes on the top of its head, moving as fast as the wind. Its name is Ba. The country in which it appears will suffer a great drought.
