Pronounced ji. Refers to a female musician. Hongya Ji is a legendary figure from the era of the Three Sovereigns, considered the origin of the profession of courtesans. Cited in Origins of All Things (Wanwu Yuanshi). One theory states that in ancient times there were no courtesans, and that it was not until the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han that military camp courtesans were established to provide companionship for unmarried soldiers, as cited in Supplementary History of Emperor Wu of the Han (Hanwu Waishi).
