According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced jing (level tone). Defined in the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen) as rigid tension. In the Inner Canon (Neijing), it is noted that all forms of spasms accompanied by neck stiffness are related to dampness. Medical texts describe the condition as fever and aversion to cold caused by the invasion of cold and dampness, resulting in stiffness and tension of the neck and nape, the body arching backward as if in a stroke, or sometimes muscle twitching and an open mouth, which is known as jing. Commonly written in a variant form.
