Pronounced fu.
Shuowen Jiezi says it means bird eggs being incubated. Another definition is trust.
Xu Kai says: When birds incubate eggs, they do so according to a fixed time, never failing to be punctual.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Deya: The trust of King Cheng. Annotation: Refers to the trust established by King Cheng throughout the realm.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Lu: Once a case is judged, it makes the people convinced.
Also, Book of Rites (Liji), Pin Yi: The luster of jade is clear and bright, showing from the inside to the outside; this is what constitutes trust.
Ma says: Jade is a substance whose internal quality is smooth and transparent, emitting brilliance outward, and thus it is used to symbolize trust.
Also, Jiyun: Refers to the luster of jade. Also refers to the outer skin of a seed.
Book of Rites (Liji), Yueling, Zheng annotation: On the days of Jia and Yi, all things cast off their seed coats and sprout forth on their own.
Also, Zhongfu is the name of a hexagram in the Book of Changes (Yijing).

Yangzi, Fangyan: A chicken sitting on eggs that have not yet hatched. Sometimes written as a variant form (fu).

Note: Jiyun explains this as the luster of jade, pronounced fu. Since fu also has the pronunciation of fu, this is more than just a matter of rhyming.
