Yin Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Child (zǐ) Page 278, Entry 06 Archaic script. Pronounced fu. Shuowen Jiezi says it means bird eggs being incubated. Another definition is trust. Xu Kai says: When birds incubate eggs, they do so according to a fixed time, never failing to be punctual. Book of Odes (Shijing), Deya: The trust of King Cheng. Annotation: Refers to the trust established by King Cheng throughout the realm. Book of Documents (Shujing), Lu: Once a case is judged, it makes the people convinced. Also, Book of Rites (Liji), Pin Yi: The luster of jade is clear and bright, showing from the inside to the outside; this is what constitutes trust. Ma says: Jade is a substance whose internal quality is smooth and transparent, emitting brilliance outward, and thus it is used to symbolize trust. Also, Jiyun: Refers to the luster of jade. Also refers to the outer skin of a seed. Book of Rites (Liji), Yueling, Zheng annotation: On the days of Jia and Yi, all things cast off their seed coats and sprout forth on their own. Also, Zhongfu is the name of a hexagram in the Book of Changes (Yijing). Also pronounced in the departing tone (qu-sheng). Jiyun: Pronounced fu. Meaning to hatch. Yangzi, Fangyan: A chicken sitting on eggs that have not yet hatched. Sometimes written as a variant form (fu). Also rhymes with fu. Book of Odes (Shijing), Deya: Emulating King Wen, the myriad states will trust him. Rhymes with chou. Chou is pronounced in the level tone. Note: Jiyun explains this as the luster of jade, pronounced fu. Since fu also has the pronunciation of fu, this is more than just a matter of rhyming.
