Pronounced zhu.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) defines this as the roots of a tree. Xu states: When it is in the soil, it is called a root; when it is above the soil, it is called a zhu.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Hexagram of Oppression (Kun): Oppressed by a tree stump. Wang Su notes: This refers to the lowest part.
Also, zhu-gou refers to a severed piece of wood. Zhuangzi, Chapter on Understanding Life (Dasheng): The one catching cicadas keeps his body still like a wooden stump.
Also means a trunk. Han Feizi, Chapter on the Five Vermin (Wudu): A man of Song guarded a stump, hoping to again catch a rabbit.
Also refers to a tree trunk. Records of the Three Kingdoms (Shuzhi), Memorials of Zhuge: There are eight hundred mulberry trees in Chengdu.
Also interchangeable with zhu (to punish). Explaining Names (Shiming): Punishment that involves others is called zhu. Zhu means stump, like the roots, branches, and leaves of a tree stump all falling away.

Also zhu-li, also written as zhu-li, is the name of a type of music. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Book of Music (Yueshu): The music of the four barbarian tribes, the east is called, the south is called ren, the west is called zhu-li, and the north is called jin.
