Pronounced yu.
According to the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to speak recklessly.
In the Model Sayings (Fayan) by Yang Xiong: Reckless speech corrupts customs; reckless preferences corrupt the principles of conduct. In original texts, the word is sometimes written in a variant form.
Also used in personal names. For example, Yu and Ruyu, found in the History of Song (Songshi), Table of the Imperial Clan.
Pronounced yu. Same meaning as above.
Pronounced xu. Also written as the variant form (yu), which refers to the song used by those lifting heavy objects to coordinate their efforts. In the Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lu (Lushi Chunqiu), Chapter on Licentious Words: Now, those who lift large timber call out Yu beforehand, and those in the rear respond to it. In the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is sometimes written as the variant form.
