According to the Explanation of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means sickness is recovering. Xu states: It is now written as a variant form (yu), which is incorrect. The Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as slightly relieved.
In the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Record of Emperor Gao, it appears in the phrase: The King of Han’s illness recovered. The Explanation of Texts (Shiwen) states: Yu means an illness has improved.
Additionally, it means illness. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes: My parents gave birth to me, why do they cause me to be ill? The Commentary (Zhuan) says: Yu means illness. Another passage states: Do not let brothers cause harm to one another.
