In the Annals of Emperor Xuan from the History of the Former Han (Hanshu), it is written: In the third year of the Dijie reign, a decree was issued stating that imperial parks and ponds not currently visited by the emperor should be leased to the poor. The commentary by Su Lin states: Bamboo is folded and connected with rope to enclose imperial parks, preventing people from coming and going; the law refers to these as yu. Also, according to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to a bamboo fence woven in a pond to raise fish. According to the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), a pond enclosure (chi yu) is a small hut or barrier built at the water's edge to capture fish and birds. Yu signifies the barrier or enclosure of an imperial park.
