Pronounced yu. The same as yu.
Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters): To raise and educate children to make them good. Another interpretation is that it means small or young.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Section on Heaven Officials, Great Superintendent: Use nine occupations to employ the common people; the second is to cultivate plants and trees in the fields and gardens. Also, Section on Earth Officials: Used to propagate birds and beasts, and to cultivate plants and trees. Commentary: Yu is the ancient character for yu.
Ban Gu, Eastern Capital Rhapsody (Dongdu Fu): Luxuriant plants in the garden to nourish wild beasts. Commentary: Yu is the same as yu.
Also, yu-yu: The appearance of being lush and numerous.
Zuo Si, Rhapsody on the Capital of Shu (Shudu Fu): Dense houses are flourishing and numerous, covering the hills.
